I am a dreamer. An artist. A mother. A reader. A wanderer. And a lover of negative space.
Negative space is the area around the subject in an artwork. And to me, it is just as important as the subject itself. Maybe it’s more important.
Negative space can make or break a work of art. It defines the mood… provides a sense of place… enhances or competes with the subject. When I shoot, negative space is always on my mind.
Sometimes, I’m looking for a secondary point of interest. A companion for my subject… an element that will sing quiet harmony.
Sometimes, I want to create a mood. Fresh green for a springtime photograph, or deep blues for a moody seascape.
Sometimes, I want subtle texture and tone. Smooth, shifting colors and scattered light.
I always want to create a moment of serenity in a chaotic world. Just a little bit of peace. Because the quiet is just as important as the noise.Maybe it’s more important.
