What is success when it comes to landscape photography?
Wikipedia defines “success” as achieving a goal; the opposite of failure.
So what is a goal? A goal is achieving a result, an achievement or triumph.
What is Success for you?
How does that relate to landscape photography? How do you know if you are successful in landscape photography?
It’s up to you, really. There are many ways you can define success in this type of photography:
- Learned to shoot in manual mode on your camera.
- Finally figured out how to do photo stacking.
- New lens.
- Traveled somewhere in the world that you’ve always wanted to go to – to photograph.
- Won an award for one of your landscape images.
- Figured out how to use masks and layers in Photoshop.
Those could be your success.
For me: Success = Selling Prints
I’m a professional photographer. That means, I make all of my income from photography. So for me, success means I sell something. I sell a print; someone pays me money for my photography. That’s success for me. I’ve recently sold some of my landscape prints and it just makes me feel so good that I’ve actually brought money into my life to support my family. I’m able to do the things I want to do because I’ve actually sold some of my landscape prints.
My Landscape Prints
Aerial Panorama: This image below is a large panorama that I’ve done, which I’m selling to one of the car dealer shops in my area. I actually photographed this from a helicopter and it’s a stitch of five different images.
While the helicopter was hovering in one spot, I photographed from the door that was taken off. I put together all five images in Photoshop and came out to be this beautiful, large canvas.
Samurai Sunrise Panorama: This one below I photographed quite a few years ago. It’s this area called Samurai Beach.
I went there to go surfing one morning; it was a cool winters morning. The steam was coming up off the water and there’s a beautiful sunrise. I think I photographed this with a Canon EOS 20D, which is an 8.2 MP DSLR. I shot this on a panorama head of about 8 different images and I stitched them together. You can see how you can still print out something from an 8-megapixel camera. How cool is that?
Tomaree Sunset Panorama: This last one (below) is my first ever professional photography award winning image.
I took this on top of Tomaree headland, which is one of our local mountains. I photographed it using HDR(High Dynamic Range) method. It was a beautiful sunset. I took a couple of images and stitched them together later on. I used a Canon EOD 5D Mark 1 to photograph this. If I remember it right, I probably took this about eight years ago or so.
BTW: I started a very interesting discussion here in our community – all about Selling your Prints – what price do you charge?
That’s success for me and I wanted to share it with you guys.
Please do comment below on how you define success and whether you’ve had any triumphs in the last few days or weeks.
We’d love to hear how you guys are achieving success, especially if this community has helped you get to a point where you finally are achieving success. This is Brent, have a great day!
