We wanted to take some time to look at our 6th year of operations for Visual Wilderness and wish you all a very happy holidays. Here are some of the highlights from this past year.
Visual Wilderness managed to survive 2020…so far.
2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, and that includes all of us here at Visual Wilderness. We’ve been forced to make major changes to our business model – including teaching online workshops from our own homes instead of filming in remote locations, cancelling events and gatherings, and finding ways to work together without actually being together. I am proud to say that we managed to survive this very challenging year. We also wanted to say thank you to the entire Visual Wilderness community – from our professional instructors to our customers.
Online Nature Photography Classes & Video Tutorials
In 2020, we add Online nature photography classes to our video tutorial offering. This allowed us to extend our partnership with more photography and create an online teaching environment that proved highly popular with our customers and our contributing photographers during the pandemi
This was the third full year of a landscape photography streaming service offering for our customers and during 2020 this streaming service proved to be very popular with our customers. We have an excellent subscriber retention rate and continue to provide new content throughout the year. In addition, we introduced several new nature photography video tutorials & online classes that were available for free for streaming subscribers. Here are is what the customers are saying about our video tutorials:
Oh yes… and our contributing photographers continued to create some fantastic blog posts. Below are some of the most popular with landscape photographers from all over the world in 2020 (in no particular order).
We have over 50,000 subscribers & customers get educational content via notifications from Visual Wilderness on their mobile and desktop devices. Not surprisingly, both of these resources have superb engagement and a worldwide audience. Here is what some of the customers have to say…

Once again, a wonderful course (Getting it Right in Camera) that you have created here, in stunning locations, and by means of your intuitive style of teaching all the concepts and techniques can be properly digested. The case studies provide invaluable insights in how you work your cameras and the thought processes behind creating those wonderful images – easy to follow and replicate for your students.

Varina is an exceptional teacher (I’ve experienced hundreds over the years and she is among the very best, if not at the top). These case studies are an exceptional complement to the fieldwork teachings where both Varina and Jay excel with their skills and explanations. The Ultimate Landscape Photography Course is a MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE for anyone wanting to get into or improve their skills in this field.
Mastering Exposure Webinar did an excellent job of explaining
The Mastering Exposure Webinar did an excellent job of explaining the importance of the different types of histograms, and when different types of bracketing/blending would be beneficial.

This (Visual Wilderness video courses) is exactly what I didn’t realize I’ve been looking for over the past few years: the videos, case studies, raw files, and explanations are what set this so far apart from anything else I’ve found. I have just started the course, but I can confidently say excellent job!

I have been enjoying your videos from Hyperfocal Distance and The Ultimate Landscape Photography Courses. And I must say you – Jay and Varina – explain photography really well. And I love the humour that you guys bring.
I love Alan Shapiro‘s energy and enthusiasm for his subject. He brings inanimate objects to life and exposes their soul.

I have used both your free and paid video tutorials. What I really like about your approach over some of the many others I have read, is that you concentrate on one small topic (such as hyperfocal distance). I found that I was more likely to go out and practice and thus retain what I learned better than when attacking a much broader topic.
Our latest video courses & online classes were based on fine-tuning your start-to-finish workflow for some of the most important aspects of photography. These nature educational products, with a razor-sharp focus on different aspects of landscape and nature photography and are sold in over 70 countries around the world.
What is Coming in 2021?
Throughout this coming year, we plan to create more in-depth video courses on several aspects of landscape photography. In addition, producing more on-location video courses that feature workshop-style lessons as soon as we are able to travel safely.
I could startoff like this – “Seeds of Jay Patel’s appreciation for beautiful places were planted early in his childhood….” but it would get boring really fast. I will just sum it up and say that I am a Landscape and Wilderness Photographer who loves to capture dramatic light. My photographs have been published in various magazines, calendars and advertising materials throughout the world. Patience is a virtue...unless you are chasing your dreams
